Denturists are part of the dental health team which specifically provides denture care through independent practitioners in the province of Ontario.

The quality of prosthodontic services offered by a Denturist contributes to the improvement of a patient’s oral health and quality of life. The value of this service lies in effectively replacing tooth function while preserving the oral tissues supporting the prosthesis.

In fabricating removable prostheses, various steps and technical procedures are necessary in order to assure the highest quality of service possible. Many different types of dentures can be fabricated; therefore the fees will vary according to the technical procedures involved and the degree of skill required. *

Learning to wear dentures is like learning to ride a bicycle – practice is necessary. Here are a few tips to make it easier for you to get the most from your new dentures.

  • The lower denture always feels much looser than the upper. Try to hold it down when you eat by spreading your tongue out at the back.
  • When eating, take small mouthfuls of food at first, and cut the food into smaller pieces so that you don’t bite with your front teeth. Wait until you are used to your dentures to use the front teeth.
  • Try to eat food on both sides of your mouth at the same time. Start with eating soft foods (eggs, fish, soft bread) before trying harder items.
  • Don’t worry about your speech being affected. This will correct itself within several days to weeks. The key is to keep practicing.
  • When sleeping, you should wear your dentures for the first night, this will help your gums and tissue get accustomed to them. After this, leave them out at night – the gums will remain healthier.
  • Your dentures will probably cause sore spots during the first few days. If this is the case, remove them for 45min to 1 hour to give your tissues a break, then put the denture back in. Rinsing with warm salt water will help with cleansing the tissue. If these spots are so uncomfortable that you are unable to wear the dentures, book an appointment to visit the office: (416) 441-4121. Try to persist for three hours or so before your next appointment. This will help us locate sore spots.

Clean your dentures thoroughly at night by using cold water, liquid soap and a firm toothbrush. Hot water may be harmful. You can also use an appropriate denture cleansing tablet, when soaking your dentures over night. Clean your dentures over a towel or basin of water so that if they are dropped, they won’t break. Hold your lower denture in the middle. Do not hold it by squeezing the ends together as it may fracture. You can also periodically rinse or brush your dentures throughout the day, take the same care when cleaning them during the day. When you remove your dentures, ALWAYS store them in cold water. If they dry out, they may change their shape or warp.

Having a yearly check-up, also known as a recall exam, with your Denturist is important to ensure your dentures are functioning correctly while preserving the oral tissues supporting the prosthesis.

Do not hesitate to call the office if your dentures require adjustment (416) 441-4121.

Dentures are no different than other dental/medical devices or prostheses, they require regular maintenance by your Denturist and will eventually need to be replaced. Your Denturist is the professional who will advise you on your specific oral health needs and circumstances. Most dental insurance plans cover dentures every five years.~

At Don Mills Denture Clinic, a Denturist will provide you with the professional advice you need to make an informed decision regarding the denture choice that is best for you. The importance of a thorough consultation and examination with your Denturist is essential. This consultation gives you the chance to discuss your concerns and the treatment options available to you. It also allows your Denturist the opportunity to assess your oral condition and address your needs and expectations.

Chewing efficiently is the first step in digestion. Once the food is minced to a consistency that is safe to swallow, acids in the stomach break down the food further for your body to use. If you suffer from heartburn, acid reflux, or other stomach-related problems, this may be due to your lack of chewing ability, dull teeth or other related denture concerns.

Complete dentures replace tooth function when a patient has lost all their natural teeth. Complete dentures can replace upper or lower teeth or both. Well-crafted dentures can restore your smile and allow you to have improved function, style and quality without compromising comfort. Denturists offer various types of dentures, depending on your needs.

A partial denture replaces one or more missing natural teeth and is customized to a patient’s individual needs. Removable partial dentures restore a person’s natural appearance and greatly improve the ability to chew and speak clearly. Missing teeth should not be ignored.

The benefits of partial dentures – Partial dentures are designed to be removable for ease of cleaning. A partial denture may prevent your natural teeth from shifting. In fact, a partial denture may help maintain the position of your natural teeth by providing them with additional support.

Proper digestion and nutrition are critical to your overall general health. When you are unable to chew your food effectively because of missing natural teeth, or you have excessively worn dentures, then you should see your Denturist for a consultation.°

It is critical to maintain your dentures to ensure maximum comfort, chewing efficiency and appearance. An annual checkup is an opportunity to identify problems and possibly save you money and trouble in the future.

An annual recare/recall appointment is important to ensure the following possible concerns are examined by your Denturist:

Oral Tissue and Jaw Bone
Over time, your mouth undergoes inevitable changes. Shrinkage (atrophy) of the underlying jaw bone on which your dentures rest is inevitable. The soft gum tissue that covers the jaw bone will also change over time. Your dentures’ fitting surfaces do not change over time and your dentures may not fit as they once did.

Oral Cavity
Having an annual oral exam may help prevent or detect the existence of oral cancer or other abnormal conditions.

Medical and Dental History
Updating both your medical and dental history is an important step towards quality overall treatment, as changes may directly affect the fit of your dentures.

Your Denturist can help you achieve and maintain optimum oral health.

Soft liners are used to increase chewing comfort in new or existing dentures. Soft liners are bonded to the surface of dentures and rest on the oral tissues. The soft liner acts as a shock absorber between the hard plastic denture base and the sensitive oral tissues covering the jaw ridges. If you are suffering with denture sore spots, speak to your Denturist about how a soft liner may help you. Permanent soft liners provide comfort and relief for individuals with: chronic soreness.

Like all dentures, soft lined dentures require regular follow up visits with a Denturist to examine the fit of the dentures, the health of the oral tissues, and to professionally clean dentures, if recommended.

In fabricating removable prostheses, various steps and technical procedures are necessary in order to ensure the highest level of service possible. Many different types of dentures can be fabricated, which is why at Don Mills Denture Clinic our clinicians will schedule you for the necessary appointments to create your custom dentures. These appointments include:
1. Preliminary Impression – moulds are taken of your mouth. These moulds allow us to initially look at your anatomy to help determine your custom course of treatment.
2. Final Impressions – a more detailed mould is taken of your mouth; your cheeks and facial muscles will help mold this impression.
3. Bite Registration – during this appointment the distance between your upper and lower jaw is established as well as position between your upper and lower jaw. We will also select your tooth colour and shape.
4. Try-In – your previously selected teeth will be set in wax to try-in. We will verify the distance between your upper and lower jaw as well as their biting relationship. Aesthetics and your speech are also verified. Once the Denturist is happy with the function and you are happy with the aesthetics, we proceed to the final step.
5. Insertion – your custom, aesthetic dentures are inserted into your mouth. The previous records are verified, and any pressure spots are relieved. We will explain to you what to expect over the next little while.

After-care – after your dentures are delivered to you, you might develop some sore spots along the way. This is completely normal when adjusting to your new dentures. We will set up an initial after-care appointment to make sure your new dentures are settling in well.

Annual Denture Check – it is important to see your denturist once a year to make sure your dentures are still balanced and functioning well. A thorough cleaning of your dentures is performed and an oral health screening is conducted at this appointment.
